The 8a certification process is complicated and takes around 4 months to get completed. However, once you have that wonderful letter saying "congratulations you have been accepted" you still have to complete a SBA form 1010C. This is business plan with marketing plan. As soon as you get the letter from the SBA you will call your local office (details will be given in the letter) and set up an appointment to go over the business plan. If you are prepared for that meeting by already having a business plan ready, then you will be able to complete the process right then and get your 8a certification completed immediately and start getting contracts. This is the last step to the 8a certification process and can delay things a lot if you are not prepared with a 1010c plan.

The SBA 8a certification application can be a very difficult process. The SBA has made part of the 8a certification process relatively straight forward by doing it online. What makes the 8a application so difficult is all the other information that has to get compiled and presented to the SBA in order for the SBA to process the 8a certification application. Many 8a applicants become ineligible for 8a certification due to the $250,000 net worth limit. This limit excludes your personal residence as well as the value of your business. The key lesson is not to make attempts at hiding assets from the SBA. The SBA has a great deal of knowledge regarding understanding the size of a business and looking at two years tax returns to know what an individuals net worth is. The catch with the sba is always that I need to have enough money and business that they deem my business to have a high likelihood of success while at the same time if I have excess capital that is outside of my business then I am no longer deemed economically disadvantaged. Some planning can be done to mitigate this problem if the individuals net worth is close to $250,000, such as selling securities and investing the money in the primary resdience but for individuals with extremely high net worths it is difficult or impossible to work around this clause in the sba application.

After a month of hard work you finally complete the 8a application and mail it to either San Fransisco or the Philedelphia office of the Small Business Administration. Then you wait sometimes a just a day or two and sometimes up to 15 business days. Their will be a business oportunity specialist that will review the 8a certification applicition for completeness and he or she will send you an email with a list of 2 to 20 things additional that the SBA needs to consider you application complete. This will be frustrating but be happy the SBA did not just return your application as the return about 70% of them at this point. Answer the request in the week they give you and you will be fine.
