The MBE is a National Certification, when obtained can prove to be very vital for a Small Business. MBE’s can be self-identified but are typically certified by a city, state or federal agency. The predominant certifier for minority businesses is the National Minority Supplier Development Council. If your company wants to connect with private-sector buyers, the National Minority Supplier Development Council (NMSDC)’s certification can be a real asset. The organization has an impressive list of corporate members. The council helps these companies connect with the more than 17,000 minority-owned suppliers in its database. Seventeen states and 25 cities also accept NMSDC certification for programs designed to help minorities win federal contracts. For the small business owners, turning their small business into a massive one is the ultimate dream. But that dream doesn’t come easily. It’s hard work, and there are challenges around every corner. Fortunately, entrepreneurs don’t have to go it alone. Their chance of success increases with access to the business knowledge and guidance of experienced professionals like EZ8A.

Criteria for Certification:
1. United States citizens.
2. Minority businesses must be at least 51% minority-owned operated and controlled. For the purposes of NMSDC’s program, a minority group member is an individual who is at least 25% Asian, Black, Hispanic or Native American. Minority eligibility is established via a combination of screenings, interviews and site visits. Ownership, in the case of a publicly-owned business, means that at least 51% of the stock is owned by one or more minority group members.
3. Must be a profit enterprise and physically located in the U. S. or its trust territories.
4. Management and daily operations must be exercised by the minority ownership member(s).
“Minority groups” are generally defined as having an ethnic background consisting of Asian, Black, Hispanic, East Asian Indian and/or Native American. Some applications require US Citizenship, some applications accept legal residents. Some applications require a 75% ethnic heritage others will accept as little as one fourth. Note: Non-For-Profit companies DO NOT qualify for any certifications.
How to apply: Start by contacting one of the NMSDC’s 37 regional councils. Your council will provide you with a standardized application and request documents to support your minority status claim. Unlike most minority-owned certification programs, the organization will make a mandatory visit to your company to verify the information on your application. If your certification is denied, you can appeal within 30 days. If you lose the appeal, you can reapply after a year.
